Major Paul Hale (Retired) was serving as a United Nations Military Observer in Angola in 1992 when he was plucked out of Africa and sent to Belgrade, Serbia, on short notice. In this interview he describes those chaotic initial days as he helped prepare for the arrival of Major-General Lewis Mackenzie and Canadian troops en route from 4 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group in Germany to Sarajevo. This interview was recorded for the Balkans 35th Commemoration, a volunteer, veteran-led initiative. Our mission is to commemorate the 35th Anniversary of Canada’s contribution to peacekeeping and stability operations in the Balkans.
